Baileyton United Methodist Church Receives $4,968 Grant from Trinity UMC Brooks’ Trust Fund for Youth Sunday School Classrooms
Baileyton United Methodist Church received $4,968 from the Buel and Mildred Brooks Trust Fund to replace furniture and contents in the church’s youth Sunday School classrooms destroyed by fire over the Thanksgiving holiday. The $4,968 grant will defray losses not covered by insurance proceeds and will allow the church to refurnish the children’s Sunday School classrooms once the church is rebuilt.
Baileyton United Methodist Church was founded in 1905 and had recently celebrated its Centennial. Throughout the years, the church has actively ministered to the youth in the Baileyton community. In recent years, its Vacation Bible School held at the church along with the other churches on the Baileyton circuit (Doty’s Chapel, Sulphur Springs and Zion) averaged attendance exceeding 100 children and adults.
During the rebuilding process, the congregation is holding services at Baileyton School Auditorium, with Sunday School each Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and worship services at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Cathy Fowler pastors the Baileyton Charge and leads worship services at Baileyton United Methodist Church on 1st and 3rd Sundays while Lay Speaker Wade McAmis delivers worship services on 2nd and 4th Sundays. Services are also held each 5th Sunday with a guest lay speaker.
The Buel and Mildred Brooks Trust Fund is administered by the United Methodist Church Foundation of the Holston Conference and Trinity United Methodist Church. The purpose of the trust is to benefit citizens and residents of Greeneville and Greene County through charitable or religious groups with an emphasis on local youth. Since the trust began in 2002, more than $300,000 have been given to help the youth of Greeneville and Greene County. The Buel and Mildred Brooks Trust Fund was established after Mildred Brooks’ death in 2002. At the time of her death, she was the widow of Buel Brooks, who had died in 1996. The couple lived in the Sunnyside community, but through their trust fund have given to youth in all parts of Greene County.
Grant applications for the Buel and Mildred Brooks Trust Fund are considered four times a year. Applications can be picked up at Trinity UMC. For more information, call the church at 638-7521.
